How to make money on Instagram

Six routes, and only two of them depend on follower count. The other four work at almost any size, which is the opposite of what the platform's own culture suggests.

Almost every guide to this answers a different question - how to get followers - and then assumes income follows. It frequently does not, and accounts with very large followings that earn nothing are common enough to be a genre.

Why the follower question is the wrong one

Because what a brand or a buyer responds to is who follows you, not how many. A thousand people who share one specific interest are worth more to an advertiser in that field than fifty thousand people who followed for a viral video and have nothing in common.

The same holds for the routes that need no followers at all. Two hundred people who came for one subject will click a relevant recommendation at rates a general audience never approaches, because relevance is the thing doing the work.

The order that works

  1. Choose one subject narrow enough to be recognisable. Not "lifestyle" - a specific thing someone could describe in a sentence.
  2. Set up a recommendation immediately. Something genuinely useful, relevant to that subject. This is the route that pays first and it needs no threshold of any kind.
  3. Post consistently enough for the platform to categorise you. It needs to know who to show you to before it can show you to anyone.
  4. Build a way to have conversations, because Instagram's strongest mechanic is the DM rather than the feed.
  5. Add brand deals and platform monetisation later, when there is an audience worth paying for.

What Instagram is genuinely good at

Conversation. It is the only major platform where a stranger will message you and expect a reply, and where that exchange feels normal rather than intrusive.

That is why the highest-converting approach on Instagram is not a link in a bio but a conversation started from a comment. It uses the thing the platform does better than anything else, instead of fighting it by trying to send people away.

Where it is weaker than the alternatives

Nothing compounds. A post reaches its audience within days and then contributes nothing, which means the work resets constantly - unlike a search-driven platform where a post from last year can still be bringing people in today.

That is not a reason to avoid it. It is a reason to pair it with something that does compound, and to be realistic that Instagram rewards consistency rather than accumulation.
