The first thousand, and why it is the hardest part

The first stretch is slow for a structural reason rather than a motivational one: the platform does not yet know who to show your posts to, so it shows them to almost nobody while it works that out.

What is actually happening in the flat stretch

Every post is a test. The system shows it to a small group, watches what they do, and uses that to decide whether to show it more widely and to whom. Early on it has very little to go on, so the tests are small and the results are noisy.

Once enough posts on a consistent subject have been tested, the account gets placed - the system develops a working idea of who your audience is - and reach becomes far less random. That transition is what people describe as an account "taking off", and it looks sudden from outside while being entirely gradual underneath.

What gets you through it faster

1. Post on one subject only. Every off-subject post resets some of what the system had worked out, which is the most common reason the flat stretch drags on.
2. Publish enough to give it data. Three posts a week for two months is enough for placement; three posts a month is not.
3. Make each post survivable to the end. Completion is the signal that matters most while the audience is still being found.
4. Give people a reason to follow, explicitly. Say what the account is about and what the next post will cover.

What not to do

Do not buy followers, join pods, or trade follows. All three fill the account with people who will not engage, which is precisely the signal the system uses to decide whether to show your posts to anyone. It makes the flat stretch permanent.

Do not change subject at week three because nothing is happening. Nothing happening at week three is the expected result, and switching restarts the clock rather than skipping it.

Start earning before you get there

The routes that need no threshold work at two hundred followers. A relevant recommendation to a small, interested audience converts at rates that regularly surprise people, because relevance rather than size is what drives it.

This matters practically: an account earning something during the flat stretch is one the owner keeps going with. An account earning nothing for six months is one that gets abandoned in month five, which is usually just before placement.

The one metric worth watching in the flat stretch

How many people who saw a post were not already following you. It is in the post insights, and it tells you whether the platform is testing your content on strangers, which is the thing that has to happen before anything else can.

If that share is rising, placement is happening even while the follower count is flat. If it is not, the subject is probably still too broad for the system to categorise, and narrowing does more than posting more.

What changes after the first thousand

Reach becomes more predictable, brand approaches begin, and the platform's own tools start coming into range. The work does not change; the results simply stop being random.
