Own the product, or promote one

This is the only genuine either-or in the seller's catalogue, and it is not a question about which course is better. It is a question about which business you want to be running in six months.

The row people skip

The last one. An own-product business creates obligations that outlive your enthusiasm for it, and that is not a small footnote — it is the difference between a project you can pause and one you cannot. Anyone who has run a membership will tell you the same.

Which first

Promote before you produce. Selling a finished product somebody else built teaches you what makes people buy, without you simultaneously having to guess what to build. Then build the thing your buyers have already told you they want.

Doing it the other way round means your first product is a guess, and a guess that took two months to make is expensive to discover you were wrong about.

The trap in the middle

The expensive mistake is not choosing wrong. It is choosing both, badly — starting an own-product build because it is more appealing, stalling on it because there is no audience to sell it to, then starting affiliate marketing six weeks later with less enthusiasm than you began with.

That sequence is common enough to be worth naming. The build feels like progress the entire time it is happening, which is what makes it hard to abandon, and by the time the lack of an audience becomes undeniable the motivation to start over has usually gone.

Picking one and finishing it beats picking the theoretically optimal one. That is true here and it is true of the wider decision. Which the final verdict says outright.

When the order flips

If you already have an audience, or a genuine expertise people ask you about, the bottleneck is product rather than traffic and the sequence reverses. That is a real situation and it is who Profit Helix is for.

The verdict

For someone who has never earned online: Commission Cycle, and it is not close. For someone with an audience and something to teach: the other one, and the launch is a distraction.

The crossover between them is the interesting part — the mechanism that makes moving from one to the other natural rather than a restart. Set out in detail here.

The paid decision closes 24 September 2026, 11:59pm Pacific. Whether to act on it this month is here.
