Comment-to-DM, and why it works

You post something useful, you ask people to comment one specific word to get more, and everyone who does receives a direct message. Simple enough to describe in a sentence, and it outperforms the alternative by a distance worth understanding.

The four reasons it converts

  1. The ask costs almost nothing. Typing one word is the smallest action a person can take, so very few decline on effort grounds. A link asks for four decisions where this asks for one.
  2. Doing it is a commitment. Small, public, and it changes how the person relates to what comes next. Someone who has already acted is far more likely to keep acting.
  3. It is public, so it compounds. Comments are the engagement signal the platform responds to most strongly, so the mechanic feeds the reach that feeds the mechanic.
  4. The reward is immediate. Seconds, not an email later. Immediacy does more work here than any of the wording.

The third point is the one people miss. This is not simply a nicer way to hand out a link - it is a way of asking for something the platform actively rewards, instead of something it quietly penalises.

What you send matters more than the mechanic

The automation delivers a message to someone who raised their hand. Everything after that depends on whether what you sent was worth asking for.

Send something genuinely useful and the next message is welcome. Send something thin with a pitch attached and you have spent a real moment of interest teaching someone not to trust you - which is a much worse trade than sending nothing.

The question that turns delivery into conversation

After the promised thing arrives, ask one open question about their situation. Something specific enough that answering requires them to describe where they actually are.

That single question is the hinge. Without it you have run a delivery service; with it you have started the conversation that everything else depends on.

What to do when the volume is small

Send the messages yourself. At ten or twenty comments a post there is nothing to automate, and doing it manually teaches you what people actually ask, which is information you cannot get any other way and which shapes everything you write later.

Automate when the manual version stops being possible, not before. Setting up tooling for volume you do not have is a productive-feeling way of avoiding the part that works.

Where automation helps and where it hurts

Automate up to the first real answer, then take over personally. The volume problem is in the first message, not the fifth, so automating further adds no leverage and costs the thing that made the conversation work.

People forgive a slow reply. They do not forgive discovering they were talking to a sequence when they thought otherwise, and that discovery is what turns a warm contact cold.
