What Instagram requires before you can earn through it

There is no single requirement, because there is no single tool. Each monetisation product has its own eligibility, and several of them vary by country - which is why every article quoting one magic follower number is wrong for most people who read it.

What is common to all of them

Why the follower number differs by tool

Some products have a follower threshold, some have none, and the thresholds that exist have been adjusted more than once. Subscriptions, badges, gifts and bonuses have each had different requirements at different times and in different markets.

Rather than trusting any published figure, open the professional dashboard in the app. It lists what your account can use right now. That takes thirty seconds and it is correct, which no third-party page can promise.

The originality rule that catches people out

Reposted content with nothing added is the most common disqualifier. Compilations of other people's clips, reposted memes, content lifted from elsewhere with a watermark still attached - all of it can build a following and none of it satisfies the policies.

This matters most for theme pages and aggregator accounts, which can grow quickly and then discover the growth cannot be monetised through the platform at all. Those accounts can still earn well - through recommendations and partnerships - but not through the tools.

What happens if an account is rejected

It is not permanent. Rejections generally relate to a specific policy issue, and the notification says which. Removing the content that caused it and applying again is the normal path.

The one that takes longest to fix is originality, because the remedy is not deleting a post or two - it is changing what the account publishes. An account built entirely on reposted material has to become something different before it can qualify, which is worth knowing before that account is built rather than afterwards.

What has no requirements whatsoever

Affiliate commission, your own products, and services. No eligibility, no threshold, no application, no review, no country restriction beyond the programmes you join.

Worth stating plainly because the requirements above generate a lot of anxiety about being "not monetised yet", and that phrase describes only the smallest of the routes available. An account can be earning meaningfully while being ineligible for every tool on the platform.

What to check before assuming you are ineligible

Open the professional dashboard rather than reading about it. Eligibility differs by product and by country, it changes, and plenty of accounts assume they do not qualify for things they already qualify for.

It is also worth checking again periodically. Products roll out to new markets and thresholds get adjusted, so an answer from six months ago may no longer be the current one for your account.

The practical reading

Treat platform eligibility as something that arrives on its own if you build a real audience around a real subject. Chasing it directly means optimising for thresholds rather than for the audience that makes every other route work.
